Proven Privacy Architecture
Screen enclosures, device lockdown, and anonymous data transmission — respondent identity is never linked to sensitive answers.
When honest answers matter most — private, self-administered digital surveys
CASI (Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing) is a data collection method in which respondents answer survey questions privately on a digital device — tablet, kiosk, or laptop — without an interviewer seeing their screen. By removing the social pressure of face-to-face interaction, CASI produces significantly more honest responses on sensitive topics such as income, health behaviours, substance use, and workplace satisfaction. At Fieldstat, we deploy CASI projects across all 16 voivodeships in Poland, both as standalone kiosk studies and as privacy modules embedded within larger CAPI interviews.
How it works in practice. CASI is most commonly deployed as a self-completion module within a larger CAPI interview. The interviewer conducts the standard questionnaire face-to-face, then hands the device to the respondent for a block of sensitive questions — alcohol consumption, financial situation, intimate behaviours, employee satisfaction. The respondent answers alone; the interviewer cannot see the screen. After the sensitive block, the device returns to the interviewer. This hybrid approach (CAPI + CASI) is the European gold standard for studies like ESPAD, EHIS, and national health behaviour surveys.
The standalone kiosk format. CASI also operates independently via multimedia kiosks placed in clinics, government offices, shopping centres, and service points. The kiosk provides a private screen enclosure, large touch buttons, and a questionnaire optimised for quick, intuitive completion. Identity can be verified at the location, repeat responses prevented, and the physical environment controlled — advantages that pure online surveys (CAWI) cannot match.
Why Poland? Poland has one of Europe’s most developed networks of CAPI fieldwork infrastructure. Fieldstat deploys CASI modules across 16 voivodeships, with trained field teams who manage device logistics, respondent flow, and data security. Whether you need 500 self-completion modules embedded in a national health survey or 50 kiosks in retail locations, we handle the full chain: questionnaire programming, device configuration, field deployment, quality control, and anonymised data delivery.
The privacy premium. Comparative studies consistently show that CASI responses on sensitive topics are 15–30% closer to objective benchmarks than CAPI responses on identical questions. For any research where honesty is the primary data quality concern, CASI is not optional — it is the methodological requirement.

Screen enclosures, device lockdown, and anonymous data transmission — respondent identity is never linked to sensitive answers.
We seamlessly integrate CASI self-completion modules into interviewer-led surveys, following ESPAD and EHIS standards.
We deploy and manage self-completion kiosks across clinics, offices, and retail locations in all 16 Polish voivodeships.
Built-in response time checks, consistency validation, and paradata analysis ensure every completed questionnaire meets quality thresholds.
We design the CASI module with sensitivity-appropriate question flow, skip logic, and multimedia stimuli where needed.
We programme tablets or kiosks with the survey software, configure device lockdown, and set up encrypted data transmission.
We deliver devices to research locations, train field staff on CASI protocols, and set up respondent flow management.
Respondents complete surveys privately. Our quality team monitors completion rates, response times, and data integrity in real time.
We deliver a fully anonymised, validated dataset with paradata analysis and a methodological quality report.
In CASI, the respondent is physically present at a controlled location (clinic, office, research facility). This allows identity verification, prevents duplicate responses, and ensures appropriate completion conditions. CAWI is remote and uncontrolled — you cannot verify who actually completed the survey.
Yes. CASI surveys are fully anonymous — respondent identity is never linked to answers. Data is transmitted encrypted and stored without personal identifiers. Results are reported exclusively in aggregate.
Whenever the questionnaire includes sensitive topics — health behaviours, income, substance use, workplace grievances, intimate questions. Comparative studies consistently show CASI produces more honest responses than interviewer-administered questions on these subjects.
We use tablets (iPad, Android) with dedicated survey apps, standalone multimedia kiosks with privacy screens, and laptops with device lockdown. All devices prevent respondents from exiting the survey application.
The optimal length is 5–15 minutes. For kiosk deployments in waiting areas, we recommend 10 minutes maximum. Longer questionnaires reduce data quality and completion rates.
Yes — this is the most common format. The interviewer conducts the standard CAPI questionnaire, then hands the device to the respondent for a CASI self-completion block on sensitive topics. This hybrid approach is the European standard for public health surveys.
Costs depend on sample size, number of locations, and project duration. Standalone CASI kiosk projects start from PLN 15,000. CASI modules embedded in CAPI surveys add PLN 5–15 per completed interview to the base CAPI cost.
